The US Congress's probe of the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol by Donald Trump supporters trying to overturn his election defeat enters a new phase this week with hearings meant to refocus attention on the violence and those who planned it.
President Donald Trump's final batch of pardons is expected to contain few controversial or outlandish criminals. According to CNN, Trump spent Saturday night huddled in a lengthy meeting with his legal advisers. In it, he was warned that pardoning himself and his family members would put him in legal peril and convey the appearance of guilt. Also, pardoning GOP lawmakers involved in the Capitol insurrection would anger the very Senate Republicans impeaching him. Several of Trump's closest advisers have also urged him not to grant clemency to anyone who breached the US Capitol. White House counsel Pat Cipollone and another attorney who represented Trump in his first impeachment trial, Eric Herschmann, offered the grave warnings. Trump, his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner listened quietly. Trump may, of course, change his mind.
A Missouri woman has been charged with five counts for taking a splintered nameplate belonging to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Newser reports Emily Hernandez committed the deed during the January 6th riot at the US Capitol. Hernandez was charged, among other crimes, with disorderly conduct and the stealing or disposing of government property. The FBI received online tips from at least three people saying they saw Hernandez in TV news footage. She was filmed holding up a broken engraved piece of wood bearing the words 'House' and 'Nancy' during the storming of the Capitol.
Florida, aka The Sunshine State, is known for its sunny, sandy beaches, low taxes, and colorful characters. And as the Trump family has become personam non grata among the Manhattan hoi-polloi, it makes sense that President Donald Trump intends to settle there. Now, Business Insider reports even more members of the Trump clan may be making the state their home after President Donald Trump leaves office. The once-again impeached President and first lady Melania Trump plan to take up residence at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. Donald Trump, Jr. and his girlfriend, GOP operative Kimberly Guilfoyle, are house-hunting in Jupiter, Florida--home to Trump Jr.'s ex-wife and children. And Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner have dropped $32 million on a bare lot on a private island near Miami, dubbed 'Billionaire's Bunker.'
Barbara Res is a real estate executive who once worked for now-President Donald Trump, overseeing construction and development for the Trump Organization. Res says Trump refused to listen to expert advice, hired unqualified people based on their loyalty to him, disrespected his employees, and used racist language. According to Business Insider, Res says Trump once complained to her about seeing a Black construction laborer working on one of his Trump Tower buildings. Res says Trump told her, 'I don't want people thinking Trump Towers are being built by Black people.' She added that Trump also said he didn't want Black people lounging in his building lobbies, because 'millionaires are coming into my apartments.'
