It's been a tough 12 months for the airline industry, hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. But there are also ongoing concerns about the environmental impact of air travel. Could electric planes be a way forward? They are already being trialled in Slovenia and fully electric, commercial flights could be ready to take off in just 10 years' time. Our colleagues from France 2 report, with FRANCE 24's James Vasina.

The Chrysler Halcyon Concept reinforces the brand’s commitment to the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 plan, which cultivates the electrified and more efficient propulsion systems that will enable Stellantis to cut its global carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and to lead the transportation industry by achieving net carbon zero by 2038.

    Starting 2026, all newly developed vans from Mercedes-Benz will be based on just one single innovative, modular and scalable architecture called VAN.EA, short for Van Electric Architecture. According to the “electric-only” strategy, VAN.EA has been developed from scratch as a purpose battery electric vehicle (BEV).All future midsize and large vans will be built on it, both commercial and private. Whether in commercial use as a versatile premium all-rounder or as a private luxury van: VAN.EA-based vehicles will focus on added value for the customers and their individual needs.With the VAN.EA one architecture strategy, Mercedes‑Benz Vans will achieve a comprehensive complexity reduction in its purpose-built EV product portfolio translating into significant economies of scale. It is planned to reduce the portfolio variants by more than 50% compared to current vans with an internal combustion engine (ICE) while covering the same use cases for the customers.

    Mercedes-Benz tested the latest generation of brake control systems on drives in Arjeplog, Sweden, near the Arctic Circle. For more than 20 years, an official branch of the Sindelfingen plant has existed here: its very own test centre for testing in the most extreme conditions. In addition to the EQE, EQS, EQS SUV and EQE SUV, models of future vehicle generations based on future platforms were also used in the drives across a frozen lake and up the region’s highest mountain.“During the test drives, our team is primarily concerned with safety, efficiency and driving comfort. The development team tunes the brake control systems individually for each model series – and pushes them to their physical limits.”Christoph Böhm, Head of Brake Control Systems, Mercedes-Benz AGOn the way to an all-electric future, the team is working on a new generation of stability control systems. These make use of the properties of the electric drive to precisely control the torque at the wheels.     The mobility of the future is being powered by electric wheels. A good charging infrastructure is crucial for popularising electric cars. And so is knowing which type of charging is the most appropriate according to the characteristics of the vehicle and the time and place of charging. Electric vehicle charging can be confusing, but it’s easier than it seems once you become familiar with some of the concepts. With this in mind, an expert from SEAT S.A. explains in detail the different charging modes of the future.If you have a plug-in hybrid car or small electric vehicle at home, you can leave it charging overnight in the garage with a type 2 slow charger. With this option, the vehicle is connected to the electrical network via an adapter that plugs into a domestic socket (Schuko type) to ensure safe charging. In this mode, (for a capacity of 3.6 kW) the battery in a hybrid takes between 3 and 4 hours to charge from 0 to 100% and an average of 16 hours in an electric, depending on the power, the cable and the capacity of the battery. However, in the case of a considerably long-range 100% electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, like the SEAT Tarraco e-HYBRID, the most convenient option is the type 3 semi-fast charging mode.
