Indian police fired blanks into crowds today as thousands ignored a curfew protesting against a controversial new method of citizenship that fast-tracks citizenship applications for refugees persecuted in three neighbouring countries, but only for non-Muslims. Many Islamic groups, the opposition, and human rights organisations claim this is part of Prime Minister Modi's Hindu nationalist agenda to marginalise India's 200 million Muslims, something he denies.

French lawmakers tackle a bill on Monday to dig up radical Islam by its roots in the country, beliefs that authorities maintain are creeping into public services, associations, some schools and online with the goal of undermining national values.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex on Wednesday defended draft legislation aimed at clamping down on radical Islamism as a "law of freedom" after a torrent of criticism from Muslim countries and expressions of concern from the US. "This bill is not a text aimed against religions or against the Muslim religion in particular," he told reporters after the cabinet approved a text to present to parliament. "It is the reverse -- it is a law of freedom, it is a law of protection, it is a law of emancipation against religious fundamentalism."
