Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala vows to reenergize World Trade Organization

Description

Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says she plans to reenergize the World Trade Organization as the institution's new director-general. "I think the WTO is too important to allow it to be slowed down, paralyzed and moribund the way it was being made to be – not fit for purpose," Okonjo-Iweala says during an interview with AFP at her home near the US capital. "That's not right."

  • The WHO Says Masks Shouldn't Be Worn During Exercise

Masks do not need to be worn during "vigorous intensity physical activity," the WHO has said. The WHO, or the World Health Organization, made updated guidelines, citing new research. The research says wearing masks can have negative effects, reports Business Insider. The WHO said other prevention measures, like distancing and ventilation, need to be in place. This includes indoor exercise venues or these venues should temporarily close. Some experts disagree with the guidance, however, citing that masks don't impair breathing.

  • The WHO No Longer Recommends Remdesivir For COVID-19 Patients

The FDA approved remdesivir as a treatment for severe COVID-19 cases last month. This is after granting emergency authorization in May, reports Business Insider. But on Thursday, the WHO announced it will not recommend the drug's use for COVID-19 patients. "There is currently no evidence that it improves survival or the need for ventilation," the organization said. Remdesivir was the first coronavirus treatment to receive emergency authorization from the FDA. With Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines on the horizon, there is less of a need for weaker treatments.

  • Measles Never Really Went Away, And It Killed 200,000 in 2019

In 2019, measles infected at least 860,000 people and killed over 200,000 worldwide. According to Gizmodo, the World Health Organization says it's a roughly 50% jump in deaths from the highly contagious but vaccine-preventable viral illness. What's more, the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is likely to make this situation even worse. Outbreaks were especially large and uncontrolled in Africa and Europe, which the WHO says was fundamentally due to the failure to vaccinate. Many countries this year have documented declines in routine vaccinations, including the US. Experts fear the pandemic will thwart the battle against diseases such as measles, HIV, and tuberculosis--particularly in already-struggling regions.
