Israel unleashes a wave of air strikes against the Gaza Strip killing at least two Palestinians, while scores of rockets are fired back from the Hamas-run territory.
Israeli air strikes hammered the Gaza Strip Monday after a week of violence that has left nearly 200 people dead, the large majority Palestinian, many of them children, despite international calls for de-escalation. Israel killed a senior Palestinian militant commander in heavy air strikes on Gaza on Monday and Islamist groups renewed rocket attacks on Israeli cities. Militants in Gaza launched rocket barrages into Israel for a second day on Tuesday and Israeli planes fired missiles in the Palestinian territory, where the health ministry said the death toll rose to at least 24, including children. The militant group said the rockets were in response to an Israeli police crackdown on Muslim worshippers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
