Osman Kavala, an imprisoned Turkish human rights defender, has been awarded the Council of Europe's Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize. As Ankara's bête noire, Kavala risked incurring the wrath of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In his absence, it was his wife, Ayse Bugra Kavala, who received the award from the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Tiny Kox, in the hemicycle of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg urges the United States to stick with Europe as the military alliance turned 75 on Thursday under the shadow of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the spectre of Donald Trump's possible return to power in the US. "I don't believe in America alone, just as I don't believe in Europe alone.
