Osman Kavala, an imprisoned Turkish human rights defender, has been awarded the Council of Europe's Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize. On Friday the Ohio Statehouse passed legislation that would require remains from a surgical abortion be either buried or cremated. GOP Gov. Mike DeWine has previously supported controversial and restrictive abortion legislation. Business Insider reports that DeWine is expected to sign the bill. Other states have passed or at least considered similar bills. The Supreme Court upheld similar legislation in Indiana in 2019.
Senator Susan Collins is a Republican leader that serves on the behalf of Maine. She has lost several key endorsements to Democratic challenger Sara Gideon this election cycle. However, she received the full support last week of at least one group in her state: The anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion Christian Civic League of Maine. Collins has positioned herself as a supporter of LGBTQ issues and reproductive rights. Even still, Collins says she was “truly grateful” for the group’s endorsement.
