Armenia PM fires military chief after 'attempted coup'

Erevan (Armenia), Feb 25 (EFE).- (Camera: Suren Stepanyan) Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday fired the head of the country’s armed forces after an “attempted coup.”Chief of General Staff Onik Gasparyan was among dozens of senior army officials, who signed a statement Thursday calling on the prime minister to step down. Pashinyan has faced growing opposition after Armenian forces were defeated in the Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020.FOOTAGE OF PASHINIAN AT THE INDEPENDENCE SQUARE IN THE ARMENIAN CAPITAL AND OF A MARCH.SOUNDBITES OF ARMENIAN PRIME MINISTER, NIKOL PASHINIAN: "As if we were thieves, but before stealing anything from the people, we cut off our hands.""Long live the Republic of Armenia, long live Artsaj (Armenian name of Nagorno Karabakh), long live our children, who must live in a strong, determined and proud Armenia."
