Mourners arrive at church to attend the funeral service for Zambia’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda. A hero of the struggle against white-minority rule, Kaunda, popularly known by his initials of KK, died at the age of 97 on 17 June 2021 at a military hospital where he had been admitted with pneumonia. He was president of Zambia for 27 years, taking the helm after the country gained independence in October 1964.
