The European Medicines Agency has advised people with "severely weakened immune systems" to get a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, in a statement issued on Monday.
The annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) is on in Geneva, with world leaders attending it throughout the week, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel, amid those trying to muscle up efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. The agency’s head pushed for ambitious goals, also “wanting at least 10% of the World’s population vaccinated by September”, FRANCE 24’s John Zarocostas reports from Geneva.
The US is expected to back the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for people aged 12 to 15 within a week. Europe's watchdog launched its review on Monday with a decision expected in June.
The deputy executive director of EU's drug watchdog says during a press conference that a review of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine found its benefits still outweigh the risks for adults despite links to blood clots. SOUNDBITE
It comes after the regulator said there was a possible link between very rare cases of blood clots and the AstraZeneca vaccine.
