Several thousand onlookers venture down the steep, winding trail around Mount Fagradalsfjall to admire the week-long volcanic eruption near the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, "a once-in-a-lifetime experience," says British tourist Celine Paul.
Scientists and curious onlookers admire the “incredible” eruption of a volcanic fissure in an uninhabited valley 40 kilometres to Iceland’s capital Raykjavik. The eruption happened on Wedneseday near the site of the Mount Fagradalsfjall volcano in southwestern Iceland that spewed magma for six months between March and September 2021.
On Sunday, the entire western flanks of both cinder cones of the volcano collapsed, showing the inner part of the lava. In was the highest and strongest since the beginning of the eruption spewing around 50 metres (164 feet) high.

Curious onlookers have flocked to an erupting volcano in Iceland to marvel at the hypnotic display of glowing red lava. The eruption of a fissure near Mount Fagradalsfjall, is the first in the same volcanic system in about 900 years.
