Over the course of his lifetime, between purchases and re-finances, Business Insider contributor Dan Miller has closed on at least ten mortgages. Having learned from his experience, Miller always asks for a very specific document before closing day--whether the lender likes it or not. The document is the HUD-1 statement: a list of all of the charges and credits to be paid by the buyer and seller. Miller says that by inspecting the document beforehand, you can take care of any discrepancies in advance. That way, people won't be pressuring you to sign on closing day. So, feel free to tell your lender and real estate agent that you won't be attending closing unless you've received your final HUD statement!
President-elect Joe Biden is planning to nominate Janet Yellen to head the Treasury Department. Business Insider reports if the US Senate confirms Yellen, she will be the first woman to hold the job. Yellen served as Fed Chair during President Barack Obama's second term, from 2014 to 2017. President Donald Trump replaced her with Jerome Powell as head of the Fed. If confirmed, Yellen will face an immense set of challenges, including the pandemic, unemployment, and widespread housing and food insecurity. With both parties fiercely divided on its size and reach for months, Congress still hasn't approved a second coronavirus economic aid package.
President-elect Joe Biden secured the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency more than a week ago. However, many of the president's allies and appointees have remained silent while Trump continues to falsely claim that he won the race. General Services Administration chief Emily Murphy is in charge of acknowledging the election winner and beginning the formal transfer of power. Murphy has not issued the 'letter of ascertainment' that triggers the release of funds and facilities allowing the transfer to begin. Now, Business Insider reports Murphy is privately exploring her job option, based on a message of Murphy discussing employment opportunities in 2021. The apparent job search contradicts President Donald Trump's messaging that he won the election.
Pres. Elect Joe Biden is considering nominating a woman as the head of the Pentagon. Business Insider reports that Biden is considering Michele Flournoy, a politically moderate Pentagon veteran. She has years of experience in the Department of Defense and is regarded by US officials as a top choice for the position. Her possible appointment would end a tumultuous period under Pres. Trump that has seen five men hold the job in the last four years. If she is confirmed, Flournoy could be put in charge of deploying the military to distribute a coronavirus vaccine.
President Donald Trump has vowed to fight the outcome of the election that left opponent Joe Biden as president-elect. He's deployed a team of lawyers to fight election results in several states, insisting widespread voter fraud was at play and that the election was 'stolen' from him. Now, Business Insider reports the head of Trump's legal team has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. David Bossie tested positive on Sunday. Bossie is not a lawyer but is a frequent contributor to Fox News. Several others in Trump's inner circle have also recently caught COVID-19, including HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
