Trans women in Peru demand labour market integration

Description

Lima (Peru), Dec 14 (EFE), (Camera: Mikhail Huacàn).- At the age of 37, Skarlet Salas got her first formal job after becoming the first trans woman to work in the cleaning service of the municipality of Lima. This is how she was able to leave prostitution, the only alternative for 70% of trans women in Peru. Skarlet is the first woman hired by the municipality of Lima which is now working to promote inclusion in the labour market in this community, an initiative launched by the councillor Manuel Siccha, the first openly gay councillor.FOOTAGE AND SOUNDBITES OF SKARLET SALAS:"I had never, never had a job before. I had always said everytime I have been asked in interviews, I had always dreamt of having a job because working on the streets is very difficult. I say that from my own experience."SOUNDBITES OF MANUEL SICCHA, COUNCILLOR OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF LIMA:"Basically, what the municipality has done is taking into account trans people for existing job vacancies, something that it had not been done before. No new jobs are being created for them,it is important to point this out, because the idea is integrating them and that this policy is real."
