The CUPRA Leon not only offers contemporary performance, it is also one of the safest vehicles on the market: after the CUPRA Formentor, the brand's compact car has now also received a five-star rating and thus the top rating in the more stringent Euro NCAP test procedure.The CUPRA Leon achieved high scores in all areas for both the model variants with combustion engine and the plug-in hybrid variants: occupant protection for adults 91 percent, for children 88 percent; Protection of vulnerable road users 71 percent and 80 percent with the assistance systems. Regardless of the engine, every CUPRA Leon has very good prerequisites for making a contribution to more safety in road traffic.The excellent result in the test is no coincidence. The CUPRA Leon can come up with a whole range of safety and comfort technologies. These include the Autonomous Emergency Brake Assistant (AEB), traffic sign recognition, the traffic jam assistant, the light assistant and the pre-crash assistant. In addition, seven airbags including a standard central front airbag, Front Assist with vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist detection, the emergency steering assistant as well as the intersection assistant, the lane departure warning system and the eCall emergency call system make the CUPRA Leon one of the safest vehicles currently available on the market .The CUPRA Leon follows the CUPRA Formentor, which also achieved the top grade. The security organization Euro NCAP revises its test procedures every two years and, thanks to the adjustments made in the past year, it is more stringent than ever before.
Honda’s new electric supermini, the Honda e, represents the state of the art for green driving. It lacks some of the more advanced safety features present in the Honda Jazz but produces a respectable four-star rating in Euro NCAP’s latest tests, nevertheless. The more conventional Hyundai i10 brings up the rear in this batch of tests. In the full-width frontal impact, the driver’s pelvis slipped under the lap belt, a phenomenon known as ‘submarining’. The Hyundai i10 also offers a more limited AEB functionality then some other small cars, and ends up with three stars overall.

The ISUZU D-MAX pick-up was rated by partner Australasian NCAP earlier this year. Some tests have been repeated by Euro NCAP to ensure a valid rating for the European market. Competing in a segment that is not famous for highlighting safety, the D-MAX crew cab is impressively equipped, with standard restraints, AEB and a new centre airbag. However, the mobile progressive deformable barrier test showed that its weight and front structure make the pick-up aggressive to other vehicles in a collision. The same is true of the Land Rover Defender: larger and heavier than previous models, the new Defender is equipped with modern driver-assistance systems to prevent and mitigate, as far as possible, collisions with other road-users. Another heavy-weight, the KIA Sorento, is the 4th generation large off-roader tested by Euro NCAP. It comes with new safety updates, including KIA’s first centre airbag and advanced e-Call system, and thanks to these retains its 5 stars, despite its underwhelming performance in the frontal offset crash.
The award-winning New Land Rover Defender 110* has earned another five-star review – this time from the safety experts at Euro NCAP. Land Rover’s most capable and durable model ever has been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the latest round of test results.The Defender combines state-of-the-art assisting technologies with an ultra-stiff aluminium-intensive body construction engineered to cope with rugged landscapes. Clever technologies available on Defender include Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Rear Collision Monitor†.Six airbags are designed to protect the driver and passengers, while up to three ISOFIX mounting points are available. New Defender scored 85 per cent for Adult and Child Occupant protection, 79 per cent for Safety Assist and achieved a 71 per cent score for Vulnerable Road Users on its way to a five-star overall rating.
