The Suez Canal - one of the world's most important shipping routes - has been blocked after a 400-metre long container ship ran aground on Tuesday. The MV Ever Given got stuck in the waterway during high winds, according to its operator. The canal's authorities are working to free the ship, as a backlog of other vessels have built up north and south of the blockage. Also today, Amazon warehouse workers and delivery drivers in Italy have staged a 24-hour strike over their working conditions.
Images released by the Suez Canal Authority show a boat towing the now refloating M/V Glory, a cargo vessel grounded in Egypt's Suez Canal, while joining a southbound convoy near to Al Qantarah. Suez Canal maritime traffic has resumed to "normal" after the 225-metre-long cargo vessel carrying Ukrainian grain ran aground but was then refloated and towed away, according to Egyptian authorities. Egypt releases ship that blocked Suez Canal
The massive container ship blocking the Suez Canal for almost a week has been turned 80 percent in the right direction, officials said Monday, raising hopes the vital trade route could soon be clear. But its owner said that while the giant ship "has turned", it was still not yet afloat. The MV Ever Given, longer than four football fields, has been wedged diagonally across the canal since Tuesday, strangling world supply chains and costing the global economy billions.
12% of global trade passes through the canal and older channels have been opened to try to deal with the backlog of traffic. It is thought that a gust of wind caused the ship to get stuck.
