Beijing, May 21 (EFE / EPA) .- The 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, opened its annual session on Thursday, after having been postponed from its original date in March, in the light of the coronavirus pandemic. The CPPCC annual session kicked off one day before the annual meeting of the National People's Congress (NPC), which is China’s most important political event of the year. The NPC runs alongside the annual plenary meetings of the CPPCC, together known as 'Lianghui' or 'Two Meetings'. At the NPC meeting, which will be held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the main topics will be the management of the coronavirus, the approval of a civil code that has been in preparation since 2004 and the progress in eradicating poverty. Likewise, the annual meeting of the NPC seeks to assess the necessary instruments to dodge the storm that may derive from the high urban unemployment rates: 6 percent in April, 5.9 percent in March, 6.2 percent in February, while the maximum it had reached in 2019 was 5.3 percent. Only a small group of 20 international media journalists were selected to cover the Two Sessions, including two from EFE. The NPC and CPPCC annual sessions are set to conclude on May 27.
