A new record breaking cable car gondola opened at Valley Station in Bavaria's Grainau on Thursday and started taking take brave visitors to the peak of the Zugspitze - the highest point in Germany. The cable car breaks several world records, including the world's tallest steel support standing at 417 feet, the longest distance from the only support to the mountain station at 10,540 feet, and the largest height difference between the valley station and the mountain station at 6381 feet.

Aerial images show lava near the Icelandic fishing town of Grindavik as volcanic activity eases following an eruption which began early Sunday. Grindavik's 4,000 residents had been evacuated in November as a precaution. Shortly after a December 18 eruption, they were allowed to return for brief periods. They were authorised to regain their homes permanently on December 23 but only a few dozen chose to do so. IMAGES
The Icelandic Prime Minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, announces that the authorises have bought "70 flats that people can move into before Christmas which is the people who are in most dire need of housing" following the evacuation of the town of Grindavik because of a volcanic eruption. SOUNDBITE
Images show large cracks and holes that have emerged in road and pavement surfaces in the southwestern Icelandic town of Grindavik as the threat of a volcanic eruption looms. The town, home to around 4,000 people, was evacuated on Saturday after magma shifting under the Earth's crust caused hundreds of earthquakes. The area is now only accessible under police escort.
