US lawmakers are back to square one with respect to the passage of the most recent $900 billion pandemic stimulus package. CNN reports the House of Representatives on Thursday failed to secure an increase of direct payments to Americans from $600 to $2,000. The attempt was a response to one of President Donald Trump's surprise demands he made in a tweeted video late on Tuesday. House Democrats tried to quickly pass the bill by a unanimous consent request Thursday morning, but Republicans rejected the move. GOP lawmakers are now in a difficult spot where they will be forced to decide whether or not they will defy the President.
Pope Francis spoke out against people who protested coronavirus lockdowns, says Business Insider. "Looking to the common good is much more than the sum of what is good for individuals," he wrote. The opinion piece came out in the New York Times after a new Supreme Court ruling. The Supreme Court ruled against placing restrictions on religious gatherings in New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo implemented this plan originally to help curb virus transmission. Pope Francis slammed people who protested coronavirus restrictions in the name of "personal freedom".
Public health experts warned for months that Thanksgiving should not happen traditionally. The reasoning being that dinner would be the perfect place for the coronavirus to spread. They suggested people limit their feasts, just for this year, to single-household affairs. Still, more than a third of Americans said they would not be making any changes. Thanksgiving 2020 would remain traditional despite the looming virus threat. Many said they'd travel and mix households without wearing masks or opening up windows.
Dr. Deborah Birx one of the White House's most senior coronavirus advisers, issued a dire warning on November 2. Dr. Birx her warned the Covid-19 pandemic is going to get much, much worse before it gets any better. Birx said: "We are entering the most concerning and most deadly phase of this pandemic". Dr. Birx went on to warn that the coming weeks and months could lead to an increased mortality rate from the virus. Dr, Birx warned that the US could see more than 100,000 new cases per day this week. Birx cautions that as hospitals fill up, we could see a return to hospitals operating at capacity and rationing ventilators.
