President-elect Joe Biden received a dose of the Pfizer and BioNTech coronavirus vaccine on Monday afternoon. The first shot in a series of two was administered at ChristianaCare Hospital in Newark, Delaware. Biden's vaccination came one week after the first doses of the vaccine were given to health care workers. Biden noted that the vaccine rollout was in the beginning stages and cautioned Americans about the long road ahead. According to CNN President-elect Biden cautioned Americans saying: "It's going to take time". Biden urged Americans in the meantime to listen to public health experts, wear masks and maintain social distance.
Israel has been a pioneer in vaccinating its citizens against the coronavirus and began offering a third dose to citizens as early as last summer.
"What we should really be reading into this is that any vaccine that boosts immunity will do the job," clinical expert Bharat Pankhania told Euronews.
"We have very effective vaccines that have proven to be effective against all variants so far, in terms of severity of disease and hospitalisation, and there is no reason to think that this would not be the case with Omicron," said WHO emergency manager.
President Joe Biden hailed the move as a "turning point" in the fight against the pandemic.
