Giant Quran showcased in Indonesia

Jakarta, Apr 27 (EFE/EPA).- A giant Quran is being displayed during the month of Ramadan at Jakarta Islamic Center. The one-meter-long and fifty-centimeter-wide Quran was made by students of the Wonosobo Koranic Science University, Central Java in 2001 and stored in the library of the Jakarta Islamic Center. Muslims around the world celebrate the holy month of Ramadan by praying during the night time and abstaining from eating, drinking, and sexual acts during the period between sunrise and sunset. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and it is believed that the revelation of the first verse in Quran was during its last 10 nights. Traditional giant puppets, known as ondel-ondel, stand in a neighbourhood locally known as Kampung Ondel-ondel, or Ondel-ondel village in the Indonesian capital. More than a dozen ondel-ondel makers live in the neighbourhood.Good quality ondel-ondels sells for between $95 and $180.
