NATO is stepping up chemical and nuclear defences for it forces in eastern Europe in the face of fears over Russia's war on Ukraine, says alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. SOUNDBITE
As casualties rise in eastern Ukraine, NATO defence ministers meet to sign off on a network of command centres in eastern Europe to rapidly reinforce the region in the event of any threat from Russia. Jillian Kitchener reports.
Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson says the "northern flank of NATO is more complete" as he holds a press conference with his Norwegian and Finnish counterparts in Troms, Norway. Swedish troops are taking part in a vast NATO military exercise to simulate repelling an invasion of neighbouring Norway. SOUNDBITE
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says Ukraine is still inflicting major losses on Russia, despite Kyiv not managing to regain captured territory. "Of course we would like them to to liberate as much territory as possible, as quickly as possible, but even though the frontline has not moved, the Ukrainians have been able to inflict heavy losses on the Russian invaders," he says.
