China's economy takes a hit from Covid-19 lockdowns

Description

New data shows China's economy cooled sharply in April, as many cities including Shanghai suffered Covid-19 lockdowns. Industrial output dropped nearly 3 percent compared to a year before, while retail sales slumped 11 percent. Meanwhile, global wheat prices jump after India announces a ban on exporting the grain due to damage from a heatwave. Finally, we see how tourists are returning to Barcelona. The development is good news for local businesses but could revive tensions over mass tourism.

Shanghai, Aug 6 (EFE/EPA).- China confirmed 80 new Friday cases of Covid-19, the highest number since several outbreaks associated with the delta variant began spreading in recent weeks, as authorities have responded with selective confinements, mass test rounds and transport restrictions. These 80 positives represent a slight rebound compared to Thursday’s 62, Wednesday’s 71 or Tuesday’s 61, although local press estimated the curve would not stabilize until tests in the affected areas and the tracking of nearby cases aren’t carried out. • Red Cross urges vaccine donations to Southeast Asia, hit hard by fierce new wave of COVID-19

Various Southeast Asain Cities, Jul 13 (EFE/EPA).- The International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) on Tuesday urged the acceleration of Covid-19 vaccine deliveries to countries in Southeast Asia, hit hard by a fierce new wave of the pandemic linked in part to the Delta variant.Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are some of the countries most affected, having consistently registered record numbers of deaths and daily cases recently, and as vaccinations are carried out slowly and hospitals are full or overwhelmed."Millions of people in Asia are living on the cruel and sharp edge of a global vaccine divide between richer countries that have a steady supply and most nations in Asia that are struggling to access sufficient doses to keep their populations safe," said Alexander Matheou, IFRC Asia-Pacific director, in a statement.
