The EU ban will not be completed until the end of the year, so its economic effects are still unclear.
EU ambassadors made a final push to persuade Hungary to accept a watered-down oil embargo against Russia before a summit on Monday (May 30). Envoys from the 27 member states were meeting in an attempt to finalise a sixth package of sanctions against Moscow, but remain deadlocked over a proposed embargo on Russian oil. FRANCE 24's Dave Keating tells us more.
Hungary's government is "holding European Union decision makers hostage" by refusing to join an EU-wide embargo on Russian oil, according to Lithuania's foreign minister. This comes as EU leaders continue their efforts to gather support for a sixth sanctions package on Russia from all 27 EU member states. The government of PM Viktor Orban has claimed that an import ban on Russian oil would ruin the Hungarian economy. Lithuania's Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis tells FRANCE 24 that "Europe is weaker" as a result, and that he is "still hoping Budapest will be responsible in their decisions".
Hungary warned on Wednesday that it cannot support the proposed EU ban on Russian oil in its current form as it would "completely destroy" its energy supply security. FRANCE 24's Florence La Bruyère reports from Budapest, Hungary.
Russia's Defense Minister says that the Ukrainian army's resources are "almost exhausted". Speaking at a security conference in the Moscow region, Sergei Shoigu adds that Kyiv is "failing to achieve results," despite the "total support" from Western countries.
