Russia's invasion of Ukraine: The war risks 'sending food prices skyrocketing' worldwide

Description

At the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, Russia is being accused of having caused a "global food crisis" and putting people at risk of "famine" by starting the war in Ukraine, which serves as a breadbasket for Europe. Ukraine and Russia, which are both major cereal producers, represent 30 percent of world wheat exports, 20 percent for corn and 75 percent for sunflower oil. Five weeks into Russia's invasion, Tomson Phiri, Global Spokesperson for the World Food Programme, joins France 24 from Lviv, Ukraine. "It's not clear when this conflict will end, but what is clear is that this one month of fighting has resulted in massive damage," explains Mr. Phiri, "not only to Ukraine and Ukrainians, but also to many countries [throughout the world] that rely on it for food."
