A civilian cargo ship hoisting a Hong Kong flag arrives in Istanbul after departing from Ukraine. The Joseph Schulte is the first vessel to directly challenge Russia's new bid to seal Ukraine's access to the Black Sea since retreating from the grain agreement last month.
A civilian cargo ship sailing from Ukraine reached Istanbul on Thursday in defiance of a Moscow blockade that sent tensions soaring after Russia opened fire on a Turkish-owned ship. The Hong Kong-flagged Joseph Schulte left the port of Odesa on Wednesday -- the first vessel to directly challenge Russia's new bid to seal Ukraine's access to the Black Sea. Ukraine has called on its allies to harden Russian sanctions at a conference in Bucharest and suggests the idea of a 'NATO Black Sea'.
The cargo ships carrying over 160,000 tonnes of corn and other foodstuffs left Chernomorsk and Odesa, heading for Turkey, Italy and China under an international deal struck in July.
Over 20 million tonnes of last year's crop still cannot reach their destinations because of Russia's blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports.
