North Korea marks late leader's birthday with art exhibition

Description

An art exhibition is held in Pyongyang's Korean Art Gallery to commemorate the late leader Kim Jong Il's 80th birthday. Kim Jong Il ruled North Korea for 17 years until his death in December 2011, with his son subsequently taking power.

‘Love is forever’: North Korea celebrates founding leader’s birthday

North Koreans mark the birthday of the country's founding leader Kim Il Sung by laying flowers and paying respects in front of the statues of him and his son Kim Jong Il. Kim Il Sung died in 1994 but is the country's Eternal President, and his preserved body lies in state in a red-lit chamber at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on the outskirts of the capital. North Koreans are taught from birth to revere Kim Il Sung and his son Kim Jong Il, and all adults wear badges depicting one or both men.
