Russia's invasion of Ukraine and occupation of much of its most fertile land, in the southern regions of Mykolaiv and Kherson, has been catastrophic for the country's agriculture. Back in April, our correspondent Gulliver Cragg met one of the many farmers whose land had fallen under Russian control. Along with other local farmers, he joined the fight to liberate it – and ultimately succeeded. But as with most farms in the area, it’s now in ruins.
The city of Chernigiv, just 50 km from the Belarusian border, was never captured by Russian forces, but it was pounded with artillery and airstrikes for more than a month before the invading army withdrew. City officials estimate around 350 civilians were killed, and signs of the bombardment are everywhere: from drawings left behind by children hiding in the hospital basement for days, to the mass graves of the residents of an apartment building.
Ukrainian forces have "liberated" the Kyiv suburb of Irpin, Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky said late Monday in televised remarks. Russian forces have subjected the town to heavy bombardments as their attempt to encircle the capital Kyiv has stalled.
On Thursday, the Defence Ministry released a video showing the movement of the Russian Armed Forces in the Kyiv region during what the Russian government calls "a special military operation" in Ukraine.
Residents in Ukraine's capital Kyiv wake up to their homes destroyed after Russia's invasion force leaves a trail of damage in the city. Residential buildings lie in ruins as people begin to clear the rubble, with emergency services at the scene.
