Moscow launched dozens of air strikes across eastern Ukraine overnight, its defence ministry said Tuesday, after Kyiv accused Russian forces of unleashing a major new offensive in the Donbas region.
As fighting continues on the streets of Bakhmut in the east of Ukraine, Kyiv is racing to evacuate residents from the city as the Russian troops advance.
“The Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbas," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in a video address. He said a "significant part of the entire Russian army is now concentrated on this offensive.”
Close to thirty Islamic State group fighters were reportedly killed in Syria, between Aleppo and the Turkish border. The military in Turkey said it shelled the area in retaliation for recent attacks by the Islamic State group there, prompting thousands of civilians to flee.
Ukrainian troops have retaken seven villages spanning 90 square kilometres from Russian forces in the past week, the deputy defence minister said Monday as the early stages of Kyiv's counteroffensive notched small successes.
