Russia's war on Ukraine: Putin 'is not in a position to enter peace talks'

Description

The longer Ukraine's army fends off the invading Russians, the more it absorbs the advantages of Western weaponry and training - exactly the transformation President Vladimir Putin wanted to prevent by invading in the first place. As Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its third month, FRANCE 24 is joined by François Heisbourg, Senior Advisor at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. "Here we are no longer in the post-Cold War era in which we had a lot of asymmetric warfare. This is actually beyond asymmetry," explains Mr. Heisbourg. And he finds it quite stunning that, two months in, Russia still does not have complete air supremacy over Ukraine. Mr. Heisbourg never expected the Russians to perform so poorly, as the Ukrainian air force was, "on paper, quite inferior to the Russian air force." And so he currently shares US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's viewpoint that Ukraine can still win the war, with the right equipment and the right support. "Unless something unexpected happens today or tomorrow, the Russians will not be in a fit state to continue their offensive," asserts Mr. Heisbourg.
