After only six months in power in Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro’s government has already undertaken austerity measures to drastically reduce public spending, as promised during the election campaign. Major cuts have hit the education sector, and especially universities, which Bolsonaro and his far-right government say are infiltrated by left-wing ideology. Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro leads a massive motorbike rally in the capital Brasilia in a new mobilisation of his supporters to back his government, under pressure for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has left nearly 420,000 dead.
Brazil is Latin America’s worst-hit country by the coronavirus pandemic, but the country also passed France and became the World’s 6th country in cases, with over 190,000 cases and over 13,000 deaths. As FRANCE 24’s Rio de Janeiro correspondent Lucinda Elliott reports, far-right President Jair Bolsonaro is now obliged by the Congress to hand in his Covid-19 tests in 30 days. This comes after a big wave of infections amid presidency staff.
Over the course of the past 24 hours, Brazil’s Health Ministry has reported 9,888 more cases of coronavirus contraction and 610 deaths. With more than 100,000 reported cases today, Brazil is now one of the worst hit countries in the World. While many state governors have taken measures to contain the virus, including locking cities down, President Jair Bolsonaro argues that the measures risk doing more harm than the virus itself, warning of a possible economic collapse.
Brazilians take to the streets in more than 80 cities across the country to protest against budget cuts to public education and other measures by President Jair Bolsonaro's government.
