Far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and leftist ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrive on stage to face off in a final debate, two days from Brazil's divisive, down-to-the-wire presidential runoff election. IMAGES
Brazil is set to elect a new president in October.
"Brazil is my priority! The people are my cause!" shouts Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after narrowly winning a divisive runoff election Sunday, capping a remarkable political comeback by defeating far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro -- who has yet to accept defeat. The victory marks a stunning turnaround for the charismatic but tarnished leftist heavyweight, who left office in 2010 as the most popular president in Brazilian history, fell into disgrace when he was imprisoned for 18 months on since-quashed corruption charges, and now returns for an unprecedented third term at age 77.
Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro pack up a giant banner that reads "Bolsonaro 2022" outside Congress in Brasilia, after their candidate lost the presidential runoff to veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Lula emerged victorious with 50.83 percent of the vote to 49.17 percent for Bolsonaro, according to election authorities. IMAGES
