Tributes have been held in Paris and in the north of France for the 27 migrants who drowned trying to reach the English coast one year ago,
In the first six months of the year, 7,999 migrants attempted or successfully crossed the Channel in 399 separate "incidents", according to the French Maritime Prefecture.

More than 40,000 migrants have crossed the Channel to Britain so far this year according to the UK government, whilst Britain and France have just signed a new deal in November - increasing what the French border controls are paid in order to prevent these crossings. It is the highest daily number of migrants that have arrived in the UK since records began in 2018.
