A hospital in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv is evacuating its patients and staff over fears of Russian strikes following claims by Belarus's secret services that it, along with another medical facility, hosted military personnel. "The city is urgently beginning to evacuate two hospitals... because a video is widely circulated online, actually de facto announcing an enemy attack on these medical facilities," Kyiv's city administration said. Mike décide alors de sauver la vie d’Amanda en acceptant un programme révolutionnaire : Rivermind, capable de remplacer des tumeurs au cerveau par du tissu synthétique, pour permettre aux patients de retrouver une existence normale. Une technologie bénéfique au premier abord, qui prend un tournant glaçant lorsqu’un système d’abonnement demande de plus en plus d’énergie et d’argent à Mike et Amanda… Pourtant, un tel dispositif est loin de la réalité pour Valentin Wyart : « On n’a pas du tout les technologies nécessaires aujourd’hui pour prendre l’empreinte d’une région du cerveau. Cela représente énormément de neurones et de connexions synaptiques. » Si des implants cérébraux existent déjà, ils restent beaucoup plus simples que les dispositifs évoqués dans l’épisode 1, et notamment les publicités déclamées par Amanda : « Des entreprises comme Neuralink, dirigée par Elon Musk, font des recherches au niveau du cortex moteur. Si on le stimule, on peut théoriquement produire des mouvements chez vous, chez moi ou chez un animal qu’on aurait implanté. Mais cela donnerait l’impression d’être contrôlé par une entité extérieure. Et on pourrait peut-être faire bouger une souris dans une direction particulière, mais c’est bien le maximum qu’on pourrait faire. Il faut bien comprendre qu’une technologie qui fonctionne déjà à un niveau très simple ne pourrait pas nécessairement être améliorée dans le futur. » Valentin Wyart est donc clair sur les dispositifs mis en place dans Des gens ordinaires : « Cette technologie, je pense, n’existera jamais.
