UN Development Programme Administrator Achim Steiner says the United nations has bought a ship to remove oil and avoid a potentially catastrophic spill from a tanker decaying for years off the coast of war-ravaged Yemen. SOUNDBITE
The EU welcomes the announcement of the cessation of the hostilities between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, two years after the conflict broke out. The war's toll is unknown, but the US envoy to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, recently said that the devastation and deaths "rival what we're seeing in Ukraine". SOUNDBITE
The representative for the Ethiopian government reads out a joint statement agreed upon between the two sides of the Ethiopian conflict. "We have also agreed on a detailed programme of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration for the TPLF combatants" he says, as part of a peace process that has seen the warring parties come to an agreement at talks facilitated by the African Union in Pretoria. Britain says it will suspend 30 out of 350 arms exports licences to Israel, citing a "clear risk" they could be used in a serious breach of international humanitarian law. "These include equipment that we assess is for use in the current conflict in Gaza," says British Foreign Minister David Lammy. SOUNDBITE
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announces in Kyiv a further $2 billion in military aid for Ukrainian forces holding back Russian onslaughts at several points across the sprawling front. The announcement comes at a press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba weeks after Washington approved a $61 billion package of aid for the country following months of delays in Congress.
