On a surprise visit to Finland to participate in a summit gathering the leaders of the five Nordic nations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he believes "that this year will be decisive for us, for Ukraine, for Europe, decisive for victory". Zelensky's remarks come at a press conference with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto, whose country became NATO's newest member in April in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. SOUNDBITE

US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley expresses strong doubt that Ukraine will succeed in driving Russian troops out of its territory this year. At a US-hosted meeting on Ukraine in Germany, Milley tells reporters: "From a military standpoint I still maintain that for this year it would be very, very difficult to militarily eject the Russian forces from all, every inch of... Allies' military backing for Ukraine is paying off on the battlefield, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says, as he hosts a new round of talks on boosting Kyiv militarily. Noting that Ukrainian forces have begun their counter-offensive in the south of the country, Austin says that "now, we're seeing the demonstrable success of our common efforts on the battlefield."
