Rush to save trapped animals in Turkish city after earthquake

Description

Every day since the deadly February 6 earthquake, rescue workers from HAYTAP, the Turkish Animal Rights Federation, are scouring the rubble in Antakya. They have been pulling cats, dogs, rabbits, cows and pigeons from the ruins.

  • Rescuers Save Helpless Elephant Caught in Steep Canal

    One Indian elephant living on the island of Sri Lanka somehow found its way into a canal on Tuesday and was quickly swept up by the strong current. The steep cement banks of the canal made it impossible for the elephant to climb up over the side. A group of rescuers joined workers from Sri Lanka's Department of Willdlife Conservation to help the trapped elephant escape from the Aluthwewa Z-D main canal. Rescuers used branches, ropes, and harmless but frightening blank shots from rifles to guide the elephant to a bank of the canal where they placed wooden trunk-holds for the elephant to grab onto to pull herself up.

    It's always heartwarming to see humans working together to help animals in need. Disaster struck when one unlucky puppy fell into a freshly dug 230 foot deep well on February 5th in the Dereseki neighbourhood of the Beykoz district of Istanbul. Animal rights activists, fire fighters, municipal rescue teams and members of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) went up in arms to help with the operation.
