Hundreds of civilians have been killed since intense fighting first broke out in Sudan on Saturday. On wednesday evening, the army and the rival paramilitary rapid support Forces that it's battling tried and failed to implement another 24 hour truce in Khartoum, a day after a previous attempt also crumbled. Shooting and explosions could still be heard after the 6pm cut offf. There's fighting in several parts of the country but in Khartoum, Sudanese, diplomats, aid workers, many have been trapped by the violence while others have taken their chances and tried to flee. FRANCE 24's Laurent Berstecher explains.
Near the frontline hotspot of Bakhmut, described by President Zelensky as a "fortress", the Ukrainian town of Chasiv Yar reverberates with the sound of shelling. Despite the fighting creeping closer, those who've stayed this long won't be pushed from their homes. Civilians fled intense fighting in eastern Ukraine on Friday as Russian and Ukrainian forces engaged in a grinding battle of attrition for key cities in the country's industrial heartland. Mostly women, children and elderly residents left on a special evacuation train that departed from the city of Pokrovsk and headed west.
With many dehydrated, traumatized or in poor health, civilians struggle to flee the Old City of Mosul, where Iraqi forces are battling the last few hundred jihadists as they press the final stages of an assault to drive the Islamic State group from the city.
