The tiny Grand Duchy has been accused of being a tax haven after the OpenLux investigation revealed the country hosts 55,000 offshore companies.
Now it's Amazon and Apple in the crosshairs of Brussels. The European Competition Commissioner playing tax collector, ordering Amazon to pay some 250 million euros to Luxembourg. Now the question, will the Luxembourgers take collection? We ask because in the same breath, the Commission's announced it's taking Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to recover up to 13 billion euros of tax from Apple.
Governments across the world are cracking down on tax havens, but some of those very same governments are equally touting their countries as offshore financial centres. Annette Young talks to John Christensen, director of the Tax Justice Network, about how these nations, such as Britain, are suffering from what he calls the "financial curse", where their oversized financial sectors ironically hinder economic growth.
