President Emmanuel Macron's government faces two motions of no confidence in the National Assembly on Monday after it bypassed the lower house to push through a deeply unpopular overhaul of the pension system that will raise the retirement age. France is bracing for a fifth day of nationwide strikes and protests Thursday against a pension reform that is the flagship policy of President Emmanuel Macron’s second term. This latest round is expected to be less disruptive that on previous occasions, with the Paris Metro working normally and most schools unaffected. FRANCE 24's Liza Kaminov reports.
France's controversial pension reform law may have already been forced through parliament, but public anger here over the move to push the retirement age from 62 to 64 is still palpable. Protest marches are planned across the country today, with police on high alert for more potential violence like the kind that broke out at the last rallies over the weekend. One of the most visible signs of the protests have been the mounds of garbage piling up in cities across France as trash collectors continue their strike.
