  • World’s oldest captive alligator lives in Belgrade Zoo

Belgrade (Serbia), 25 Sep (EFE/EPA), (Camera: Andrej Cukic).- At 84 years of age, he is thought to be the longest-lived American alligator in captivity and his keepers say his good health could see him carry on for several more years. Life in his small pool, a balanced diet, the care of the staff and attention from visitors seem to have a healthy effect on the reptile, which arrived in Serbia in the mid-1930s. The death of another alligator at Moscow Zoo earlier this year has left Muja without his main rival for longevity of an American alligator in captivity.FOOTAGE OF MUJA, THE AMERICAN ALLIGATOR AND SOUNDBITES BY BELGIAN ZOO VETERINARIAN JOZEF EZVEDJ.TRANSLATION:"Muja came to the zoo in 1936, when the zoo was founded, but he was not a baby, he was like a child"."He is fed every two weeks. He is getting small rodents, quails, horse meat, fish meat, fish, calf and, as for the quantity, he is gaining two or three kilos because he is at a certain age when he moves slowly"."How has he lived so long? There are many factors, I am sure there is some genetics, we should not neglect the care and diet, but also veterinary and medical care "."We recently did a complete clinical checkup and all the results were satisfactory. According to the results, he still has some years to go."
