Olympic chiefs announce that Russian and Belarusian athletes competing in this summer's Paris Games under a neutral flag will not be able to take part in the opening ceremony. SOUNDBITE
US says sports organizers should ensure that Russian and Belarusian athletes do not represent their countries if they are permitted to compete in a global sporting event. "The use of official state Russian, Belarusian flags, emblems and anthem should be prohibited as well," White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, tells reporter in a press conference at the White House. Russian Winter Olympic athletes’ new 'neutral' uniform for the upcoming PyeonChang Winter Games was presented to the press in Moscow, Tuesday. Designed by Russian outfit company ZASPORT, the colour scheme of the neutral outfit consists of grey, red and white, bearing no national symbols apart from a logo reading “Olympic Athlete of Russia," which has been printed on parkas, jackets, warm-up suits, sweatshirts and t-shirts.
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach wants ‘clean’ Russian athletes to compete under a neutral flag at the 2018 PyeonChang Winter Olympic Games he said at a press conference in Lausanne on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the IOC banned Russia from competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics, following an investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping at Sochi in 2014. The Russian Olympic Committee denies the allegations.
