For more than six decades, Ford has provided travelers with vans, trucks and chassis built for life on and off the road. In fact, more motorhomes are built on Ford chassis than any other brand. Ford Pro announced it is continuing that tradition with Transit Trail, an upfit-ready adventure van that leverages the same capability, versatility and customization options that helped make Ford Transit America’s best-selling commercial van. Transit Trail in the high-roof, extended-length configuration provides van-lifers up to 487 cubic feet of cargo space to upfit. Both high-roof variants provide full standing room to people as tall 6-feet, 5-inches. The cargo area floor in the extended-length model stretches more than 14 feet.Drillable areas positioned specifically for cabinetry, shelving, bed and more allow do-it-yourselfers and upfitters to consider countless configurations. Privacy glass and an optional roof vent fan make time spent in the van more comfortable. The Ford Transit Custom has gone electric with the new PHEV model, revealed at the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover. The new Ford Transit Custom PHEV has been revealed promising 30 miles of zero emissions range, with a claimed total range north of 300 with use of an on-board generator – a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The front wheels are driven by an electric motor, which gets its power from a 14kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, which in turn gets its energy from either the mains, or by running the 1.0-litre engine. The PHEV will offer the same 1-tonne payload and load volume of a standard diesel powered Transit Custom. A charge port has been built into the front bumper, allowing the Custom PHEV to be recharged in five hours using a domestic 240-volt 10-amp power supply. This drops to three hours using a commercial 240 volt 16-amp or 32-amp supply.

Ford is spearheading research into the potential for hydrogen as an on-board energy source for its acclaimed E-Transit.The project will establish if hydrogen fuel cell technology can deliver more zero-emission range to heavy-use E-Transit customers travelling high mileages, with maximum loads, ancillary equipment such as chillers and with limited charging opportunities in the working shift.Ford Pro, the company’s commercial vehicle (CV) and services division, will use the pilot to expand its conversion expertise, supported by engineers and E-Transit specialists from Dagenham and the company’s nearby Dunton Technical Centre, in Essex.Ford’s hydrogen fuel cell E-Transit project with the APC will validate the vehicle’s business case by linking Ford expertise as 57-year UK van market leader with fuel cell powertrain experts and fleet operators including Ocado Retail. Other partners on the project are bp, capturing hydrogen usage and infrastructure requirements; Cambustion, testing the fuel cell system; Viritech, designing hydrogen storage systems; and Cygnet Texkimp, providing the pressure vessels’ carbon fibre tooling.
