The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, addresses West African heads of state who have gathered in Abuja to hold an extraordinary summit on Niger, following a coup d'état in the country. The summit follows an announcement overnight by Niger's military regime that they had formed a new government. Heads of state from member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) arrive in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, to discuss the situation in Niger, which has been under sanctions for seven months, at a new extraordinary summit of the regional organisation. IMAGES
"We prioritise diplomatic negotiations and dialogue as the bedrock of our approach," says Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, who is chairing an emergency summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja. After the coup on July 26, the bloc gave the military leaders a deadline of last Sunday to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who is being held at the presidential palace in Niamey, or face the potential use of force. African heads of state including Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Togo's President Faure Gnassingbe, and Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo, join other senior officials and dignitaries for a family photo on the first day of a two-day African summit on counter-terrorism, aimed at looking for African-led solutions to the continent's security challenges.
