Images released by Ecuador's Armed Forces show military personnel and police officers carrying out a joint operation at the Zonal Penitentiary No 8 in the major port of Guayaquil. It comes amid the state of emergency declared in Ecuador on August 10, following the assassination of popular presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio ahead of the elections. The leader of one of Ecuador's most powerful criminal groups Los Choneros, known as 'Fito', is incarcerated at the penitentiary. IMAGES
At least 31 inmates died in a prison in Guayaquil, as fresh violence spread to the streets of the border province of Esmeraldas, in northwestern Ecuador. Vehicles were burned, soldiers deployed on the streets, and shops are closed. The government also said that inmates are holding 15 guards and two staffers hostage in a local jail in Esmeraldas. Honduras Public Order Military Police (PMOP) display weapons seized at the "Francisco Morazan" national penitentiary in Tamara. The government announced that the military police will take control of Honduras' 21 prisons for one year, starting July 1, and will train 2,000 new prison guards in the wake of clashes between rival gangs that left at least 46 women dead in a prison near the capital Tegucigalpa.
