India has successfully launched a new mission to land a robot explorer on the South Pole of the moon, a journey that will take over a month.
Japan's "Moon Sniper" mission blasted off Thursday as the country's space programme looks to bounce back from a string of recent mishaps, weeks after India's historic lunar triumph.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says India's successful Moon mission will open new avenues for other countries seeking to unravel the mysteries of the Earth's only natural satellite. Chandrayaan-3, "Mooncraft" in Sanskrit, touched down on the lunar surface on on August 23, making India the first nation to land an unmanned craft near the largely unexplored lunar south pole.
India readied Wednesday to become the first nation to land a spacecraft on the Moon's south pole, days after a Russian probe crashed in the same region.
