US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says it was critical to strengthen Ukraine before any peace deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as calls grow for negotiations. "Precisely because we have no illusions about Putin's aspirations, we believe the prerequisite for meaningful diplomacy and real peace is a stronger Ukraine -- capable of deterring and defending against any future aggression," Blinken says in a speech in Helsinki. UN chief Antonio Guterres warns that he fears the likelihood of further escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict means the world is heading towards a "wider war." "The prospects for peace keep diminishing. The chances of further escalation and bloodshed keep growing," he added as explained his 2023 priorities plan to the UN General Assembly. SOUNDBITE
