Europe's migration impasse: EU Commission pitches action plan amid France-Italy row

It's one emergency the EU didn’t need. Already dealing with a war on its doorstep, an energy crisis and rising inflation, the handling of the Ocean Viking – a ship carrying migrants rescued in the Mediterranean – starkly showed the limits of European solidarity. The EU Commission has put forward a plan of action, as well as proposing a new Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latter involves a solidarity mechanism that could be legally binding on EU member states in certain situations. But would more European solidarity simply encourage more migrants to come to Europe? That's a key bone of contention in our debate between two MEPs.

France-Italy migration row: 'Both countries want to keep migrants away'

The French government sought to play down a fresh row with Italy over migration on Friday, saying Rome was an "essential partner" after a spat with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Italy's foreign minister cancelled a trip to Paris on Thursday over what he termed "unacceptable" comments from French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who said Meloni was "incapable" of tackling her country's migration crisis. As the French government tries to play down the Italy migration row, FRANCE 24 is joined by Leila Simona Talani, Professor of the International Political Economy and Director of the Centre for Italian Politics at King’s College London. She asserts that for Italy it is "clearly one of those fights that the right-wing government has to maintain their position vis-a-vis migration."

France-Italy diplomatic row: Rome wants apology over migration 'insults'

France must apologise to end a dispute over over what Rome considers insulting remarks, including some over its handling of immigration, Italy's foreign minister said on Friday, while also signalling the spat might be short-lived. The minister, Antonio Tajani, called off a visit to Paris at the last minute on Thursday after French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Italy's right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had been "unable to solve the migration problems on which she was elected". Italy PM slams 'aggressive' France response in migrant row

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemns what she calls the "aggressive reaction" of the French government to taking in a migrant rescue vessel rejected by Rome. She tells a press conference it is "incomprehensible and unjustified", after Paris said it would accept the Ocean Viking and the 234 migrants onboard, but suspend a previous plan to take in 3,500 refugees currently in Italy.
