Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, visits the eastern frontline city of Bakhmut, now the epicentre of fighting as Russia's invasion stretches into its tenth month. Zelensky meets military officials and hands out awards to Ukrainian servicemen, who have been holding back a fierce and months-long Russian military campaign against the city. The brutal trench warfare and artillery battles around Bakhmut -- once known for its vineyards and cavernous salt mines -- have flattened large parts of the city and its surroundings. Residents of Kherson celebrate Russia's retreat from the city by drinking champagne and getting Ukrainian flags signed by soldiers. "We waited a lot for the Armed Forces of Ukraine", says a woman, raising a glass to the liberation of the city. IMAGES
Images show police and soldiers searching through debris following a strike on a residential area of Eastern Ukraine's Kramatorsk on Tuesday. The head of the Donetsk administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, wrote on Telegram that 'enemy fire' had hit the city wounding a young boy. He called on locals to evacuate. IMAGES
Images show heavy fighting in the eastern Ukrainian city of Soledar, where residents seek cover in basements as artillery fire roars through the streets. Soledar found itself on the path of Russian troops pushing to take over the Donetsk region, causing many of its residents to flee. IMAGES
With nowhere to go, the residents that left behind, are trying to survive without gas, water, and with severe food shortages. On top of that temperatures are below freezing in the cold of winter.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accuses China of "fuelling" Russia's invasion of Ukraine through the transfers of dual use materials and weapons components from Chinese businesses to Russia for use in Moscow's military expansion. "If China purports on the one hand to want good relations with Europe and other countries, it can't on the other hand be fuelling what is the biggest threat to European security since the end of the Cold War," Blinken tells a press conference after a meeting of G7 foreign ministers on the Italian island of Capri where he had urged urged his European counterparts to increase pressure on Beijing.
