Mass is held in the cathedral in the city of Regensburg, where the late former pope Benedict XVI taught at the university between 1969 and 1977 and came back regularly to visit his brother, the leader of the cathedral choir. Benedict, who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 95, had shocked the world in 2013 when he became the first pope since the Middle Ages to step down, citing his declining mental and physical health.
