A children's hospital was struck by several missiles just minutes after a New Year's address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The attack started a fire at the hospital in Kherson, in the south of the country. The Ukrainian Presidency says more than 700 of the building's windows were shattered.
The eastern Ukrainian village of Kamyanka, on the outskirts of Izyum, used to be home to 1,200 people. But after months of war and occupation by Russian forces, when Ukrainian soldiers recaptured the village in September, just 15 residents remained. One family managed to survive in the midst of heavy fighting and near total destruction.
The Ukrainian city of Kherson was liberated from Russian control one week ago and it is increasingly becoming clear the road to recovery will be long. Locals tell stories of torture in detention centers, and Ukrainian authorities say there have been hundreds of war crimes commited. FRANCE 24's Nicolas Chamontin and Oliver Farry explain.
The liberation of Kherson by Ukrainian forces has led to jubilant crowds on the city’s streets celebrating the end of the Russian occupation. But there remain severe challenges facing the city, which is still without heat, power or water and littered with mines and explosives left behind by the retreating Russian army, France 24’s Luke Shrago reports.
